Pre-Conference Workshop:
An Introduction to Building-Integrated PhotoVoltaics
Monday, April 6, 2009 | 1-5PM
Interest in the building integration of photovoltaics, where the PV elements actually become an integral part of the building, often serving as the exterior weather skin, is growing world-wide. PV specialists and innovative designers in Europe, Japan and the US are now creatively incorporating solar electricity into their work. A whole new vernacular of Solar Electric Architecture is beginning to emerge. Using the best built examples of solar-powered residences and commercial-scale buildings from Europe, Japan and the US, the workshop will present a highly visual world overview showcasing the various BIPV products and the many creative ways BIPV is now being deployed. This workshop will offer a comprehensive, yet non-technical comparison of the range of the underlying photovoltaic technologies (both thin film and crystalline silicon) that feed into BIPV products, their respective strengths and weaknesses, and the different classes of BIPV products: roofing-integrated (flexible, tiles, panels), façade and overhead glazing/atria. While the workshop is designed for newer entrants, it will also help more established players deepen their analysis of competitive trends, market niche positioning and opportunities for new products in a rapidly evolving technology arena.
