Advanced batteries are critical for next generation mobility and the emerging Smart Grid—transforming the way vehicles are powered and enabling a truly clean energy future. However, the vast majority of advanced batteries being used in North America are produced in Asia. The battery manufacturing challenge has both enormous economic and national security implications. Senior government officials and policy experts are putting forth the call: the advanced battery manufacturing gap must be closed, and quickly. The future competitive position of the US economy may be at stake.
Excitement is high among the general public, policy-makers, existing and new auto suppliers, battery technology developers, utilities, and venture investors. A number of State governments are exploring major initiatives to facilitate advanced manufacturing, with the Canadian national and provincial governments looking into major aid packages as well. On top of the $25 billion re-tooling loans for auto makers and supply chain vendors from the Department of Energy (DOE), the latest economic stimulus bill adds $2 billion in loan guarantees for advanced battery manufacturing and $200 million to encourage electric vehicle technologies. In addition, the stimulus bill includes $11 billion investment for Smart Grid, along with funds allocated for R&D.
The Advanced Battery Manufacturing conference will bring together the key stakeholders who together have the authority, know-how, I.P., tools and funding to jumpstart a new wave of battery factories and associated knowledge clusters in the U.S. and Canada.
