An Exploration of the
Cleantech IPO Market Window:
Will 2010 Be The Year of the
Return of the Cleantech IPO?

The market for initial public offerings for cleantech companies in the U.S. has been in a period of relative dormancy since 2007. This has been especially true for cleantech companies that are venture-backed, which have accounted for only a fraction of those cleantech companies that have occurred. However, the third quarter of 2009 saw a resurgence on the venture-backed cleantech IPO and, for the first time in many quarters, a backlog of potential IPO candidates appears to be developing, causing some to speculate whether 2010 will be the year of the return of the cleantech IPO.

However, it is safe to say that the investment world has changed significantly since the 2006-2007 timeframe, when we last saw significant cleantech IPO activity in the U.S. Moreover, many lessons have been learned by IPO investors since investing in the first generation biofuels and solar names that emerged on the public capital markets scene in that time frame. Our panel will explore recent trends in the IPO market windows, with an emphasis on the exploration of issues and challenges cleantech companies in the U.S. should address in considering whether an initial public offering is a realistic prospect for their financing strategy.
