Leading U.S. battery and advanced materials companies, with support from one of the country's largest national laboratories, have formed the National Alliance for Advanced Transportation Battery Cell Manufacture, known as the "Alliance," to manufacture advanced lithium ion battery cells for transportation applications in the United States. The founding members of the Alliance include 3M, ActaCell, All Cell Technologies, Altair Nanotechnologies, Dontech Global, EaglePicher Corporation, EnerSys, Envia Systems, FMC, MicroSun Technologies, Mobius Power, SiLyte, Superior Graphite, and Townsend Advanced Energy. The Alliance seeks to develop one or more manufacturing and prototype development centers in the United States, which will be shared by Alliance members. Website forthcoming.

The Rare Earth Industry and Technology Association (REITA) is a Colorado nonprofit corporation formed to facilitate the development and commercialization of rare earth technologies critical to the economic and national security interests of the nation. REITA and its members comprise a consortium of industry, government and academic partners interested in the establishment of entire value chains for these Rare Earth technologies.

REITA’s mission is to establish and foster a sustainable Rare Earth industry and technology base to meet the growing need for Rare Earth materials and products particularly for green energy, national defense, and energy independence applications. Because of REITA’s structure and mode of operation, it will qualify for agreements with the U.S. Army under “Section 845 - Other Transactions Authority” for the purpose of funding certain work to be conducted in partnership with the U.S. government and the consortium or any one or more of its members.

Technology & Rare Earth Metals (TREM) are essential parts of the clean technology and defense industries. The mission of the IAGS TREM Center is to create a forum where policymakers and companies from the minerals, defense technology, cleantech, electronics, automotive and finance sectors can advance policies that ensure secure and diverse supply chains for technology metals. The TREM Center is a project of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (http://iags.org). In addition to hosting frequent conference calls on relevant topics and policy working group meetings, the TREM Center also convenes the annual TREM Conference, the year’s most important technology metal policy event. TREM11 will take place in Washington DC on March 22-23, 2011 at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City.
