The Department of Energy Biomass and Biofuels Program works with industry, academia and laboratory partners on a balanced portfolio of research to transform our renewable and abundant biomass resources - including energy crops, agricultural residues, and woody materials - into cost-competitive, high-performance biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower, ultimately establishing a viable, sustainable, biomass industry that enhances U.S. energy security, oil independence, and environmental benefits.

The mission of the Mississippi Technology Alliance is to drive innovation and technology-based economic development for the State of Mississippi. MTA is a non-profit organization organized into three centers: The Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship; the Center for Innovation-Led Economic Development, and the Center for Capital Formation. Housed within the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is the Strategic Biomass Initiative which seeks to accelerate the commercialization of near term biomass-to energy (B2E) technologies by working with university researchers, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, communities and investors.

The USDA'S Office of Energy Policy and New Uses (OEPNU) assists the Secretary of Agriculture in developing Department policies, programs and strategies related to energy and biobased products. The Office coordinates USDA activities related to energy and biobased products within and outside the Department. The Office conducts economic analysis and evaluates policies concerning energy and the utilization of biobased products. Research is currently underway on producing renewable fuels and biopower from biomass and marketing biobased products. The Office is also involved in tracking energy use trends on crop and livestock farms.
