Keynote Speaker

Jim Flatt
Chief Technology Officer
SYNTHETIC GENOMICS, INC.

A warp-speed revolution is underway in genetics and biotech, enabled by high speed computing, software and high throughput screening and sequencing tools. These mutually-accelerating tools represent a quantum leap from the early days of genetic engineering. Researchers can now design and engineer “in silico” entirely new sequences specifying new kinds of proteins, enzymes or behaviors as opposed to snipping and splicing single gene fragments as was done in the past. Not just DNA, but complex RNA-DNA switching circuits, cellular components and metabolic pathways can now be visualized and tweaked on a laptop, and inexpensively “written” into bioreactor bugs or plants. This astounding new capability, dubbed “synthetic biology,” opens up uncharted horizons for innovative products and businesses, ranging from “drop-in bio-fuels” to bio-based plastics and renewable building materials, to cosmetics, and even food. By some estimates, the global market could be greater than $4.5 billion in a few years.

However, this explosion of biotech capacity is accompanied by novel challenges, including regulatory risks, a bio-informatics whirlwind, and the need to assess and align experimental outcomes within a focused, profit-driven program.

Following on the heels of its sold-out, highly regarded Bio-Based Chemicals series, Infocast has launched Metabolic Design 2011, the first event to foreground the pivotal business opportunities and challenges for synthetic biology platforms. Co-located with the 3rd Annual Algae World Summit, this event will bring together business development officers from a variety of markets – including research leaders, technology developers and R&D directors – to share strategic insights and management practices, learn about the availability of potentially untapped opportunities in new markets, and open up new collaborative possibilities. Don’t miss this robust learning and networking opportunity in the middle of San Diego’s “biotech beach”!
