Pre-Conference Workshop:

Status and Outlook for Advanced Power Storage Systems

Monday, July 14, 2008 | 1-5p.m.

In recent years utility-size energy storage has moved from promising concept, to pioneering application, to near-commercial installations. In some ways this development is spurred by the success of batteries with increasing energy density required for the burgeoning personal electronics market such as laptops, cellular phones, or iPods. The advent of hybrid automobiles appears to be the next step in the deployment of storage technologies. But the energy and power requirements for storage in utility applications are many orders of magnitude larger, so it is not surprising that different technologies are needed and the successes on the small electronics and hybrid car level do not easily scale up. Pilot applications for power quality, frequency regulation, renewable smoothing, microgrids, peak shaving, energy management, and renewable dispatch are underway. Workshop presenters will offer technology assessments and economic data deepening the treatment of the Summit, delving more deeply into the smallto- midrange, faster-discharging power storage applications, and projecting trends in cost reduction, reliability improvement and energy density.
