Rare Metals Supply, Demand & Price: Status & Outlook
April 7, 2010 - 8:00am - 2:00pm
News stories continue to highlight the precarious supply situation for rare earth metals. Meanwhile, palladium and indium prices have shot up. Commodities in general are expected to be a bull market in 2010. As the world shifts its power sources increasingly to windpower, electric vehicles, grid-scale energy storage, smart grid and, as wireless and digital devices become ever more varied and omnipresent, demand for rare metals is on a long-term uphill climb. This Symposium will alternate market/demand surveys with detailed supply and price presentations, each delivered by subject matter experts. Attendees will go into the main Rare Metals Summit briefed with the latest insights into changing supply/demand dynamics.

Risk Factors for Investment in Mining Ventures
April 7, 2010 - 2:30pm - 5:30pm
End user procurement officers and financiers have a vested interest in determining the risk of buying off-takes from not yet producing mining ventures. Therefore, the workshop will consist of a comparison of the metrics currently in use to evaluate the probability of commercial success of a junior mining venture. In particular, the explosive growth in the rare earth junior mining space will be examined with a view to determining which, if any, of the currently known or claimed rare earth containing ore deposits outside of the People’s Republic of China have a high probability of producing commercial quantities of either the light rare earths, the heavy rare earths, or both within time frames of 2 ½, 5, 7 ½, and 10 years. A 10 factor metric designed by Jack Lifton and Gareth Hatch will be examined, and it will be used to analyze a cross section of current rare earth mining opportunities. Explanations of how the components of the metric were derived and how they are evaluated will be followed by a panel of experts who will then comment on and criticize the metric and the results.
