Many transmission projects are moving from the drawing board and permitting process to full-scale development, which is bringing its own challenges. Enormous stimulus bill funding has been made available to WAPA and BPA to develop transmission projects, while many other utilities and developers are also planning transmission projects. Opportunities abound to develop projects to move electricity vast distances to meet reliability and market needs, and to support a future generation mix incorporating a high percentage of renewable energy—if permitting, financial and construction schedule and cost hurdles can be overcome.
At the Transmission Summit, the industry's key leaders will provide a detailed explanation of how they are working to surmount the hurdles of planning and developing large-scale projects to serve energy markets that may look very different than those of the past. They will discuss how they are responding to emerging challenges in financing and approval of multijurisdictional projects, integrating smart grid technologies, planning construction, and meeting the demands of large-scale renewable energy.
